Shower Faults That Need a Plumber
Dripping, cold or lukewarm water, and weak flow are the three faults that bring us to most shower jobs. Each one points at a different part, and each gets worse on your water bill if it waits.
A shower still dripping once everything's shut off
the wall mixer is leaking internally, past a worn washer or cartridge, and that drip runs all night.
Water weeping at the head's thread while it runs
the seal where head meets arm has failed, and it only shows under pressure.
Lukewarm water that won't heat up
the cartridge is over-blending cold; if the basin and kitchen lose hot water too, the heater is the culprit, not the shower.
A thin, patchy spray
limescale across the spray plate, a restrictor in the head, or that same tired cartridge.
A few drips straight after use are just water emptying from the head, and the dripping shower head guide shows where normal ends and a fault begins. Water tracking out through the tiles is a different problem again, and leaking shower repairs is the right page for it.

Can You Fix a Shower Yourself in Queensland
Yes, for the head alone. The QBCC classes a shower head replacement as unregulated work, which means any householder may do it, though the result still needs to comply with the standards.
Behind the head, the rules change. Fixing or swapping the arm, a wall mixer or its cartridge is minor work: it needs a licensed plumber, but no permit from council and no Form 4.
Adding an outlet, or shifting the shower, lifts the job again. That counts as notifiable work when the building already exists, so council approval isn't needed; instead the plumber reports the job to the QBCC on a Form 4 within 10 business days of finishing. The contractor pays the Form 4 lodgement fee and can on-charge it, plus admin costs, to the owner.

Matching the Fault to the Shower Part
Four parts run between the spray and the wall: head, arm or rail, hose, then the mixer. Naming the part names the fix.
Head
the spray plate where limescale and restrictors collect, and the one part you may swap yourself.
Arm
it reaches out of the wall and carries a fixed head; a leak at its join is a seal problem.
Rail and hose
the rail holds a handheld head at its height, with the hose supplying it from the wall; both sit exposed, so no wall needs opening.
Mixer cartridge
the cartridge is the mixer's working heart, controlling flow and temperature together; wear shows as a drip, a fighting handle or the wrong heat, and we match the replacement to your mixer.
Over a bath, one more part joins in. A spout that keeps running while you shower, or a head that dribbles during a bath, tells you the diverter has worn out.

Repair or Replace Your Shower Fittings
Replacement wins on two tests: wear that has gone beyond a washer or cartridge change, or a plan to add or shift the outlet. Everything else is a repair.
Head or arm
the head is yours to swap; the arm is ours, as minor work.
Mixer, like for like
a straight mixer swap stays minor work, cartridge or whole unit.
Extra outlet or a new position
notifiable work, with the Form 4 to follow.
Certification
any new fitting needs WaterMark certification before we may install it, plus registration with WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards).
Showerheads going into brand-new dwellings need a 3-star WELS rating at minimum; renovations are exempt. Reworking the whole room, or moving the shower as part of it, runs through our bathroom renovation plumbing page.

Old Steel, Weak Showers
A weak shower with nothing wrong at the head is often a supply problem. Some pre-1940 houses here still pull water through galvanised steel service lines hidden behind decades of renovation, and pipe walls that old close in on themselves, starving bathrooms fitted long after the house went up.
Converted Queenslanders add a second wrinkle. Bathrooms squeezed in where laundries used to be often have mixer bodies tiled over, so reaching a cartridge means opening the wall first. When the steel itself is the problem, repiping old pipes fixes it at the source.

Shower Repair Questions From New Farm
Call (07) 3524 7163Why does my shower run cold?
A worn cartridge in the wall mixer usually causes it, over-mixing cold water. If hot water fails at the basin and kitchen too, the water heater is behind the problem, and that gets checked next.
What causes low shower pressure in New Farm?
Limescale in the spray plate, a restrictor, or a tired cartridge are the usual fitting-side causes. When every tap in the house runs slow, the supply side is at fault, and old galvanised service lines feeding New Farm's pre-1940 homes are a common reason.
How many litres per minute can a rental showerhead use?
Nine litres a minute at most. Queensland tenancy rules set that ceiling, and a landlord who wants a tenant to pay for all water use has to keep the showerhead at or under it, so the flow gets measured first.
When should I replace a shower instead of repairing it?
Replace once the faulty part is beyond a washer or a fresh cartridge, or once an extra outlet goes in or the shower moves. New fittings need WaterMark certification and WELS registration before installation.
Do plumbers fix leaking shower walls?
No, not the waterproofing. Plumbers handle the pipes, fittings and seals inside the wall; a failed membrane behind tiles sits with a separate QBCC licence class, so New Farm homes send that work to a licensed waterproofer.
